Introducing Automatic CODEC Switch Feature
What is this feature for?
The latency of Bluetooth headphones usually increases when using Hi-Fi CODECs (such as LDAC and aptX-HD) compared to SBC. (Actual latency depends on each device's design.) If your headphones have notably higher latency when using Hi-Fi CODECs, and you want to switch to a low-latency CODEC when certain programs play sound, this feature will do so automatically.
How to use this feature?
First, select the headphones in the left pane. Then, select the Hi-Fi CODEC (LDAC or aptX HD) that you want to use by default for the headphones.
Next, select Settings in the left pane. Then, play sound from the program you want to use with the SBC and click the "Add program playing audio to the list" button. If one program is playing audio, it will be added to the list immediately. Otherwise, you will be prompted to select the program to add.
Things you need to know
- Switching the codec will cause your headphones to disconnect and then reconnect. This is the same process that occurs when you click the "(Re)connect device" button.
- This feature does not change the latency of the headphones. It simply switches the CODEC to SBC, which usually has lower latency than Hi-Fi CODECs. Therefore, if your headphones do not have a noticeable latency difference between Hi-Fi CODEC and SBC, this feature won't benefit you.
- It takes a few seconds from when the specified program starts playing audio until the CODEC switching begins. This delay is intentionally added to prevent frequent CODEC switching.
- The current version only switches from LDAC/aptX HD to SBC. If you select a CODEC other than LDAC or aptX HD, this feature has no effect (i.e., no CODEC switching occurs). If your headphones support AAC and have significantly higher latency than SBC, please let us know. We may consider adding AAC to the subject of the automatic switching.
